“Come on in. All of you.”

The manager appeared. He saw their grubby faces and smiled. “Come on in. All of you.” He helped roll the big tire into the lobby. Then he got his camera and took a photograph of them posed around their find.

It had taken them so long to get to the theater that the movie had already started. They’d missed the cartoons. But the manager had the reel put on again. He gave them free popcorn.

“My son is a soldier serving in France,” he said. “Next time I write him a letter, I’ll tell him what you all did for the war effort.”
